The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) recently apprehended a member of the infamous “One-Chance” gang that has been terrorizing unsuspecting passengers in Lagos.
Operating with a yellow-painted commercial bus, the group lured passengers with cheap fares only to rob them of their valuables.
The suspect, identified as Mr. Toyib Ogunjobi, was arrested near the Conoil Filling Station along Funsho Williams Avenue, Surulere, after a distress call from a victim, Miss Bibian Emelifonwu.
She recounted her harrowing experience, explaining how the gang skillfully stole her phone and forcefully threw her out of the moving vehicle.
Thanks to the vigilance of LASTMA officials who witnessed the incident, the bus was pursued and intercepted. Ogunjobi was arrested, but his accomplices narrowly escaped.
Suspect Confesses
During interrogation, Ogunjobi admitted to leading a three-man gang that targeted passengers traveling on the Costain-Ojota route. He revealed that the gang made between ₦250,000 and ₦300,000 daily by selling stolen phones and other valuables.
Seven stolen phones, including various Samsung and Tecno models, were recovered from the suspect.
Ogunjobi also disclosed that their operations are part of a larger network of similar criminal activities proliferating across Lagos State. He further revealed that the vehicle’s owner was complicit in the syndicate’s operations.
LASTMA’s Commendable Action
LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, praised the swift intervention of the officers, emphasizing the importance of public safety.
He encouraged Lagos residents to exercise caution when boarding public and private vehicles.
Bakare-Oki also urged the public to report suspicious activities through the LASTMA toll-free hotline: 0800-005-27862.
He assured residents that the suspect would be handed over to the police for a thorough investigation and prosecution.
“This arrest underscores the importance of vigilance and the dedication of LASTMA to ensuring the safety of Lagos residents,” Bakare-Oki stated.
