Lagos Assembly Declares War on Open Defecation
The Lagos State House of Assembly has taken a firm stance against open defecation, urging the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources to enforce environmental laws and establish free public toilets across the state.
During a recent plenary session, lawmakers highlighted the dangers of open defecation, emphasizing its negative impact on public health, economic growth, and Lagos’ reputation.
The Health and Economic Consequences
Raising the issue under ‘Urgent Public Importance,’ Stephen Ogundipe, representing Oshodi-Isolo 1, warned that open defecation not only poses a serious public health risk but also hinders Lagos’ sustainable development.
He stressed the need for a coordinated effort among stakeholders to promote proper hygiene.
Bonu Solomon, representing Badagry 1, called for decisive action, including the arrest of destitute individuals contributing to the sanitation crisis. He urged local government chairmen to support state initiatives aimed at improving cleanliness.
Concerns Over Riverine and Market Areas
Aro Moshood, representing Ikorodu 2, raised concerns about the prevalence of open defecation in riverine communities, where sanitation facilities are lacking.
He also criticized market leaders at Mile 12 for failing to cooperate with government sanitation efforts.
Speaker’s Call for Responsibility
Speaker of the House, Princess Mojisola Meranda, condemned the practice, stressing the urgent need for improved sanitation infrastructure.
She urged Lagosians to be more responsible when using public toilets to ensure they remain accessible and hygienic for all.
