In a surprising political twist, Mudashiru Obasa has returned as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly after Mojisola Meranda stepped down from the position.
Meranda, who briefly held the Speaker’s seat, has now resumed her former role as Deputy Speaker.
This development follows a series of high-level negotiations and resignations among key figures in the House.
Earlier today, both Obasa and Meranda arrived at the Assembly complex amid tensions over a possible showdown.
However, after a strategic meeting involving top government officials and lawmakers, Meranda presided over a session that saw Obasa reclaim his position.
Lagos Assembly Power Struggle
The House had been in turmoil since January 13, 2025, when 32 lawmakers voted to remove Obasa and former Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, replacing him with Meranda as Speaker.
However, intense lobbying from political heavyweights, including members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), ultimately swayed the situation in Obasa’s favor.
Reports suggest that even the Presidency intervened, urging key political players to rally behind Obasa.
A high-powered committee, initially set up by the President to resolve the crisis, was later disbanded due to findings that did not favor Obasa.
Legal Battle Looms
Despite Obasa’s return, the political feud is far from over. The former Speaker had earlier filed a lawsuit challenging his removal, dragging Meranda and 36 other lawmakers to court.
With neither camp willing to back down, sources suggest that the judiciary may ultimately decide the final outcome.
As the Lagos political scene remains heated, all eyes are now on the March 7 court hearing, which could further shape the future of the Assembly’s leadership.
