The Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has strongly condemned the tragic killing of 16 travelers in Edo State, describing the incident as “cruel and barbaric.”

Horrific Attack on Innocent Travelers

The victims, who were returning from Rivers State to Kano State, were reportedly ambushed and killed by a local vigilante group in Udune Efandion, a community in Esan North Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by Prof. Khalid Aliyu, the Secretary-General of JNI, the organization expressed deep sorrow over the senseless attack and called on the Federal Government to take urgent action to curb rising insecurity in the country.

JNI Demands Action, Not Just Condemnation

“We are tired of mere condemnations,” Aliyu stated. “The government must fulfill its duty of protecting all citizens, irrespective of their ethnicity or religion. This act is unacceptable in any civilized society.”

He also criticized the growing trend of associating criminal acts with specific ethnic or religious groups, warning that such generalizations fuel hatred and division.

Call for Justice and Enhanced Security

The JNI has demanded a thorough investigation into the killings and prosecution of those responsible. They also urged authorities to implement stronger security measures to protect travelers on Nigerian highways.

“A criminal should be treated as a criminal, regardless of their ethnicity or faith,” the statement read. “We urge the government to ensure that those behind this attack are brought to justice without delay.”

Ending Hate Speech and Promoting Peace

Beyond tackling insecurity, the JNI emphasized the need to combat hate speech, which they say fuels violence and division.

“The spread of hate speech is a serious concern. We must all work together to promote peace, unity, and tolerance,” Aliyu urged.

Appeal for Calm and Unity

Despite the rising tension, the JNI has called on Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding while efforts are made to improve security.

“We urge all Nigerians to stay calm and work towards building a more peaceful and united nation,” Aliyu concluded.
