Iranian authorities have arrested two young women following the release of a video showing them dancing in a Tehran cemetery, a move deemed disrespectful to the sacred site and in violation of the country’s Islamic dress code.
According to a police statement published by the Tasnim news agency, the women were recorded at the martyrs’ cemetery in Tehran, engaging in behavior considered inappropriate under Islamic law.
The video, which showcased them wearing “inappropriate clothing” and performing “unlawful movements,” has drawn strong reactions, particularly from families of the martyrs.
The statement emphasized that public outrage led to the arrest of the women, who have since been handed over to judicial authorities.
Iran’s Strict Dress Code:
Under the Islamic laws established after the 1979 revolution, women in Iran are required to cover their hair and neck and wear loose-fitting attire in public.
Public dancing is also strictly prohibited.
However, in recent years, many women in urban areas like Tehran have pushed these boundaries by wearing less restrictive coverings.
