Iran has made it clear that it will not negotiate under pressure, pushing back against U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest move to tighten sanctions.
The U.S. recently ended a waiver that allowed Iraq to buy electricity from Iran, escalating tensions between the two nations.
Iran Rejects ‘Intimidation’ Tactics
Initially, Iran’s mission to the United Nations hinted that discussions could be possible to address U.S. concerns over its nuclear program.
However, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi shut down the idea, stating that Tehran’s nuclear activities are strictly peaceful.
“We will NOT negotiate under pressure and intimidation. We will NOT even consider it, no matter what the subject may be,” Araghchi firmly declared on X.
Trump’s ‘Maximum Pressure’ Strategy
Since returning to the White House, Trump has revived his “maximum pressure” policy, reinstating sweeping sanctions designed to cripple Iran’s economy, particularly its oil sector.
The U.S. State Department defended the decision, saying it aims to prevent Iran from gaining economic relief.
The now-terminated waiver, first introduced in 2018 after Trump withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal, had allowed Iraq to import crucial gas and electricity from Iran.
With this waiver gone, Iraq could face serious power shortages, especially during the scorching summer months.
What’s Next for Iraq?
As the energy crisis looms, Iraq may seek alternative suppliers, such as Turkey, to fill the gap.
Meanwhile, a U.S. embassy spokesperson in Baghdad urged Iraq to reduce its reliance on Iranian energy sources.
Iran, however, remains defiant, standing by its nuclear program and refusing to bow to U.S. demands.
With tensions rising and both sides holding their ground, the standoff between Washington and Tehran shows no sign of cooling down anytime soon.
