The Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) has proposed the adoption of artificial insemination (AI) by cattle rearers as an innovative approach to mitigate recurring conflicts between farmers and herders across the nation.
Speaking at the University of Ibadan during the launch of a 14-day training program on AI techniques for animal scientists, NIAS First Vice President, Professor Akin Adesehinwa, emphasized the need to transition from traditional livestock breeding methods to modern practices. He highlighted AI as a revolutionary tool capable of reducing the need for herders to move livestock across large expanses of land, a key factor fueling farmer-herder disputes.
Efficiency and Economic Benefits
Professor Adesehinwa explained that artificial insemination enables semen from a single bull to inseminate multiple cows, ensuring more controlled and efficient reproduction. “AI is like a biological machine. With one proven bull, semen can be collected, processed, and used to inseminate several cows, thereby minimizing physical interactions and conflicts,” he stated.
Beyond conflict reduction, Adesehinwa noted that AI enhances genetic quality, improves productivity, and boosts economic returns for both small-scale and commercial livestock farmers. He urged the trained animal scientists to share their knowledge with rural farmers, ensuring widespread adoption of this technology.
Transforming Livestock Production
Suraj Ajiboye, CEO of SMAT Farms and a key speaker at the event, underscored the potential of AI to revolutionize Nigeria’s livestock sector. He pointed out its ability to enhance indigenous breeds, improve milk production, and create a more robust value chain.
Ajiboye painted a vivid picture of the possibilities, saying, “Imagine a community of 200,000 people, each owning a crossbreed animal producing 10-15 liters of milk daily. This would not only improve nutrition but also drive economic growth.” However, he acknowledged cultural and orientation barriers to the widespread adoption of AI and called for a shift in mindset to unlock the sector’s full potential.
Government Backing
In alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s efforts to modernize livestock farming, the Deputy Director of NIAS Inspectorate and Compliance, Mr. Olufemi Atunbi, affirmed the training’s importance. He emphasized the administration’s commitment to advancing livestock production as a means of fostering economic growth and reducing conflicts.
As stakeholders continue to explore AI’s transformative capabilities, its implementation promises a future where Nigeria’s livestock industry thrives while minimizing communal clashes.
