Insecurity in Nigeria:Zulum Declares Statewide Fasting and Prayer in Borno
A Call to Faith and Unity in Troubled Times
In a heartfelt statewide broadcast delivered from Maiduguri on Saturday,
May 17, 2025, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum declared Monday a day of voluntary fasting and prayer across the entire state.
This spiritual gesture, according to the governor, aims to invoke divine intervention and strengthen public resolve amid increasing security challenges in Borno and the Northeast.
“Join Me in Prayer and Fasting for Peace” – Zulum’s Appeal
Governor Zulum, while addressing the people of Borno, made an emotional appeal for residents to unite in a collective act of faith:
“In light of our current security challenges, I am calling on all residents of Borno State to unite in a collective act of faith and solidarity.
This Monday, I invite you to join me in a voluntary day of fasting and prayer for peace to reign not only in Borno State but throughout the Northeast and the entire country.”
He emphasized that the act of fasting goes beyond a personal religious ritual; it is a communal demonstration of resilience and unity.
Fasting as a Symbol of Hope and Resilience
Zulum expressed that this call to fast is a symbol of shared hope and an opportunity to renew strength as a people.
“Fasting is more than a personal spiritual act; it is a communal expression of our shared hope.
Through prayer and reflection, we can strengthen our unity, renew our resilience, and restore our collective purpose.”
He urged every resident to see this not just as a religious exercise, but a rallying point to build stronger communities rooted in faith and determination.
Security Measures Underway: Concrete Actions Beyond Prayers
While the governor is rallying residents through spiritual means, he reassured the public that tangible security strategies are being implemented.
According to Zulum, the state government is working closely with federal authorities to revamp the Insecurity in Nigeria architecture of the state.
“In recent months, I have held extensive consultations with our federal partners and the leadership of various security agencies.
I am pleased to inform you that the collaboration between Borno State and the Federal Government is stronger than ever.”
He disclosed that strategic efforts are underway to enhance intelligence sharing, equip security personnel,
and provide logistical support to all security operatives battling insurgency in the region.
Federal Government’s Support is Assured
Governor Zulum also echoed the assurances of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,
who has promised unwavering federal support in restoring peace to Borno and its environs.
“Indeed, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,
and all the Service Chiefs have given us assurances that they will do everything possible within their reach to end the current insecurity.”
This partnership, according to the governor, is central to the ongoing progress in regaining control of volatile areas and neutralizing threats.
Boosting Local Security Networks
In addition to federal collaboration, Zulum committed to strengthening local security groups. These include:
Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF)
Local Hunters
Community Vigilantes
He emphasized the importance of these grassroots forces in complementing formal security agencies.
Plans are also in place to enhance community intelligence gathering and early warning systems.
“We shall strengthen our volunteer forces and bolster our community-based security efforts as part of our overall strategy to keep Borno safe.”
Warning Against Complicity with Armed Groups
The governor issued a stern warning to individuals and communities that may be aiding or harboring terrorists:
“Let me warn against colluding with these armed groups, either individually or as a community, as they are our collective enemy.
He maintained that any form of alliance with insurgents undermines the sacrifices made by citizens,
security forces, and the government in the fight for peace.
Honoring the Fallen Heroes of the Armed Forces
Governor Zulum took a moment to pay deep respects to members of the Nigerian Armed Forces who recently lost their lives in the line of duty.
“I express my heartfelt condolences to the families of our gallant officers.
Their bravery will never be forgotten, and their sacrifices shall serve as a reminder of the cost of our collective freedom.”
Addressing the Water Crisis in Maiduguri
In addition to Insecurity in Nigeria matters, the governor acknowledged the ongoing water shortage in parts of Maiduguri, Jere, and nearby areas.
He attributed the crisis to the destruction of water infrastructure caused by the devastating September 2023 floods.
“Fellow citizens, I am aware of the ongoing water scarcity affecting parts of Maiduguri.
This is a direct consequence of the destruction of major pipelines during last year’s catastrophic floods.
He assured the public that reconstruction efforts are in full swing and appealed for continued patience as the government finalizes repairs.
Reconstituting the Anti-Social Vices Committee
To tackle the surge in urban crimes, Governor Zulum announced the reconstitution of the Anti-Social Vices Committee.
This committee will focus on combating:
Violent crimes
Theft
Drug abuse
Street gang activities
“We will not allow criminal elements to destabilize the progress we are making, insha Allah.”
A Powerful Call for Collective Action
Governor Zulum wrapped up his address with an emotional call for unity, urging everyone to participate actively in the journey toward lasting peace.
“We are fully aware that the road to lasting peace is not an easy one.
But with unity, perseverance, and faith, we shall overcome it, insha Allah.”
He also called on traditional leaders, religious institutions, youth groups, and every citizen to join hands in reclaiming the peace and prosperity of Borno State.
“Together, we can secure our communities, restore normalcy, and ensure that Borno thrives once again.”
