In a shocking incident in Mowe, Ogun State, a local artisan was allegedly brutalized by soldiers after demanding payment for services rendered. The victim, Lukmon Bisiriyu, a skilled welder, had been contracted by Mr. Terrence Erhunmwunnsee, the owner of Rev Food and Beverages Limited, for welding work valued at ₦600,000.
Bisiriyu had initially received ₦400,000 in installments, leaving a balance of ₦200,000. Hoping to secure the remaining payment, Bisiriyu left his tools at the factory, anticipating more work. However, matters took a troubling turn when an unexpected deposit of ₦74,000 appeared in his account. Erhunmwunnsee claimed the amount was mistakenly transferred and demanded a refund. Bisiriyu, overwhelmed with personal financial pressures, suggested deducting the sum from his outstanding balance—a move that reportedly infuriated the industrialist.
On December 8, 2024, Bisiriyu visited the factory to retrieve his equipment but was met with hostility. According to the artisan, Erhunmwunnsee summoned soldiers who detained and assaulted him for hours, forcing him to sign an agreement stating he owed the factory ₦174,000. He was also coerced into pledging not to damage the company’s reputation.
Bisiriyu’s ordeal left him hospitalized after collapsing from the injuries he sustained. Narrating his experience, he described the physical and emotional trauma he endured in his quest for justice.
In his defense, Mr. Erhunmwunnsee alleged that Bisiriyu trespassed on his property and threatened him. He claimed the artisan’s actions compelled him to involve the military for protection, adding that the matter had been reported to the police.
This incident sheds light on the difficulties faced by workers in collecting fair wages and raises concerns about the abuse of power in employer-employee relationships. It also underscores the need for peaceful conflict resolution and stronger protections for artisans and small business owners.
