The House of Representatives has made a generous donation of ₦705 million to support humanitarian efforts across Nigeria.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, announced the donation on behalf of the 360 lawmakers, stating that the funds were raised through a 50% deduction from their salaries over six months.
Commitment to National Welfare
Speaking on Monday night at an Iftar gathering hosted by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Abbas emphasized the lawmakers’ commitment to easing the hardship faced by vulnerable Nigerians.
He highlighted the significance of Ramadan as a time for reflection, urging both Muslims and Christians to pray for the country’s progress, economic stability, and security.
National Unity and Leadership Responsibility
At the same event, Vice President Kashim Shettima, speaking on behalf of President Tinubu, called on National Assembly leaders to prioritize unity and national development over political divisions.
He reminded lawmakers that history will judge them by the bridges they build, not by personal battles.
Reflecting on the Ramadan and Lenten seasons, Shettima urged Nigerians to embrace stability over strife and collaboration over conflict.
He commended President Tinubu’s leadership, describing him as a man of vision and inclusivity, while assuring Nigerians that the government’s economic policies were starting to yield positive results.
A Call for Responsible Governance
Shettima also praised Speaker Abbas Tajudeen for fostering harmony within the legislature, stating that peace and development go hand in hand.
He urged leaders to govern with empathy, fairness, and justice, reminding them that leadership is a sacred trust given by the people.
With this ₦705 million donation, the House of Representatives has demonstrated its commitment to supporting national humanitarian efforts, reinforcing its role in nation-building and governance.
