Hit-and-Run Driver Crushed My Legs While Trying to Save an Accident Victim – Amputee Shares Heartbreaking Story

A Tragic Turn of Events

Life can change in an instant, and for Bashiru Akinola, a former driver and father of four, that moment came on August 20, 2024.

What started as an ordinary evening drive home turned into a nightmare when he was involved in a fatal accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Akinola, who had been driving back to Olowotedo, Mowe, attempted to avoid hitting a family crossing the road.

Tragically, a child panicked and ran directly into his vehicle, leading to an unavoidable impact. In his desperate attempt to check on the boy, a Toyota Corolla struck him from behind, knocking him to the ground.

Before he could react, a speeding truck ran over his legs, leaving him critically injured.

The Devastating Aftermath

When Akinola regained consciousness at the hospital the next day, he was met with the heartbreaking reality—both his legs were beyond saving.

Despite efforts to explore alternative treatments, doctors at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan had no choice but to amputate them.

“I begged the doctors to save at least one leg, but they said both were too damaged,” he recalled, his voice filled with sorrow.

Struggling to Survive

Before the accident, Akinola worked tirelessly as a driver to support his wife and four children.

But now, with his mobility taken away, financial struggles have become overwhelming. His eldest daughter had to put her university education on hold due to the unexpected medical expenses.

Thanks to the generosity of social media donors, he was able to purchase prosthetic legs and enroll his daughter at Ibadan Polytechnic.

However, he still dreams of starting a cement distribution business to regain his financial independence.

“I want to start selling cement, but I don’t have the capital. I need at least 400 bags to begin as a distributor,” he explained.

A Plea for Support

Akinola’s resilience in the face of adversity is inspiring, but he still needs help to rebuild his life. If you’re willing to support him in any way, every contribution—big or small—can make a difference.
