Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, marked his swearing-in ceremony with a significant act of mercy and justice reform, granting freedom and sentence reductions to 43 prisoners.
Following the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, Aiyedatiwa ordered the immediate release of eight inmates, while 15 prisoners on death row had their sentences commuted to lesser prison terms.
Additionally, 20 life-term convicts were given reduced jail sentences.
Commitment to Justice and Rehabilitation
According to the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, this move reflects Aiyedatiwa’s dedication to fairness, second chances, and rehabilitation.
“This decision is a testament to Governor Aiyedatiwa’s belief in second chances and the potential for rehabilitation,” stated Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN.
The governor has consistently emphasized judicial reform as a key part of his administration’s goals.
In October 2024, he appointed six new judges to strengthen the state’s judicial system, reaffirming his dedication to a fair and effective legal process.
A New Era for Ondo State
As Aiyedatiwa embarks on his second term, his actions signal a government that prioritizes justice, fairness, and a commitment to reform.
“It has been his [late Governor Akeredolu’s] wish that I succeed him. He said it on our first day of inauguration,” Aiyedatiwa reflected.
His leadership promises a continued focus on judicial improvements, humanitarian governance, and giving deserving individuals a second chance at life.
