The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to Anamekwe Nwabuoku, a former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), accused of involvement in a ₦1.96 billion fraud.
Justice James Omotosho approved the bail for ₦500 million following Nwabuoku’s plea of not guilty to an amended nine-count charge brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Bail Conditions
The bail requires Nwabuoku to present two sureties with properties worth at least ₦250 million each within Abuja.
The sureties must also submit bank statements, tax clearance certificates for three years, and affidavits of means. All documents will undergo verification by the court’s Deputy Registrar.
Background on the Case
Nwabuoku temporarily headed the Office of the Accountant-General in May 2022 after the suspension of Ahmed Idris, the previous AGF, over allegations of laundering ₦80.2 billion.
However, investigations into Nwabuoku’s past activities during his tenure as Director of Finance at the Ministry of Defence (2019–2021) led to accusations of financial misconduct.
The EFCC claims that Nwabuoku collaborated with four companies—Temeeo Synergy Concept Limited, Turge Global Investment Limited, Laptev Bridge Limited, and Arafura Transnational Afro Limited—to commit offences under the Money Laundering Prohibition Act.
Initially, Nwabuoku and a co-defendant, Felix Nweke, sought a plea-bargain arrangement, but recent amendments to the charges removed Nweke as a defendant. Instead, Nweke will now serve as a key prosecution witness.
