In a landmark case, 25-year-old Connor Cude has become the first person in London to be convicted of breaching a Domestic Abuse Protection Order (DAPO).
This case marks a significant milestone since DAPOs were introduced in November 2024 to strengthen safeguards for domestic abuse victims.
Cude pleaded guilty on January 11, 2025, at Croydon Magistrates’ Court after violating an order issued to protect his former partner. The sentencing is scheduled for February 24 at Croydon Crown Court.
The Breach of the Domestic Abuse Protection Order
The DAPO was issued on December 28, 2024, by Bromley Magistrates’ Court following reports of a domestic disturbance.
The order prohibited Cude from contacting his former partner or visiting her home. However, during a routine welfare check on January 7, 2025, officers found Cude at the victim’s property.
He attempted to escape through the back garden but was quickly apprehended by the police.
Chief Crown Prosecutor Lionel Idan emphasized the seriousness of the breach, saying:
> “This flagrant disregard for the law will not be tolerated. Domestic abuse victims must never live in fear of their abusers.”
What Are Domestic Abuse Protection Orders (DAPOs)?
Domestic Abuse Protection Orders were introduced as part of a pilot program in Croydon, Bromley, and Sutton to offer enhanced protection for victims.
These orders aim to intervene early by prohibiting abusive behavior and enforcing mandatory actions on perpetrators. Violating a DAPO is considered a serious criminal offense, carrying penalties of up to five years in prison.
Kate Brown, the CPS’s domestic abuse lead, praised the collaborative efforts of agencies to protect victims, stating:
> “This conviction shows that offenders cannot escape accountability. Our focus is on breaking the cycle of violence and giving victims the confidence to come forward.”
Jess Phillips, the Minister for Safeguarding and Violence Against Women & Girls, reiterated the government’s commitment to combating domestic abuse:
> “These orders are proving essential in protecting victims and holding perpetrators accountable. We are dedicated to halving violence against women and girls over the next decade.”
