First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Kicks Off Women’s Empowerment Programme for Economic Growth
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has officially launched the North Central Zone Women’s Empowerment Programme, an initiative designed to support 18,500 women across the country.
The programme, under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), started with 500 women from each state in the North Central region, equipping them with tools to enhance their businesses and financial independence.
Speaking at the launch, Senator Tinubu emphasized the importance of empowering women as a key driver of national development.
“Women play a crucial role in our society, and this initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Our goal is to equip women with the tools they need to thrive economically, ensuring sustainable development and inclusive growth,” she stated.
A Pathway to Financial Independence
The programme, in collaboration with the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs), provides essential equipment such as:
✔️ Deep-chest freezers
✔️ Gas cookers with ovens
✔️ Generators
✔️ Industrial grinding machines
These resources are intended to help women build businesses, create sustainable incomes, and contribute to Nigeria’s economy.
Commitment to Gender Equality and Economic Growth
Senator Tinubu highlighted how the initiative aligns with global development goals, particularly SDG-5 (Gender Equality) and SDG-8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).
She urged beneficiaries to use these tools wisely to improve their livelihoods and strengthen their communities.
“These items are more than just tools; they are stepping stones to financial independence. We want every woman who benefits from this initiative to use it as an opportunity to create a better future for herself and her family,” she added.
Support from Key Government Officials
Other government officials present at the event praised the initiative’s potential impact:
✔️ Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, stressed that the program is about unlocking women’s potential and creating economic opportunities.
✔️ Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, applauded the shift from donor-dependent programs to government-funded empowerment.
✔️ Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, Minister of State for FCT, emphasized that women’s economic empowerment is a pillar for national progress.
Expanding the Impact Nationwide
Following the North Central launch, the programme will be expanded to other regions, with the South-South Zone next in line.
This initiative reinforces the Federal Government’s commitment to empowering women and ensuring their inclusion in Nigeria’s economic development.
