A fire incident rocked the North-West University Kano city campus on Thursday, leaving behind extensive damage but thankfully no loss of life. However, a staff member sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
The blaze, which erupted around 11:20 a.m., primarily affected the offices of the Head of Department and lecturers in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) department. Preliminary reports suggest the fire was triggered by an electrical spark.
A security officer trained in firefighting efforts was rushed to the university clinic after inhaling smoke while trying to contain the flames. Firefighters from both the Kano State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service responded swiftly, successfully preventing the fire from spreading further.
Confirming the incident, the Director of Kano State Fire Service, Sani Anas, stated that the situation was brought under control before it could escalate to other sections of the building.
Similarly, the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mukhtar Kurawa, acknowledged the damage but emphasized that the full extent of the losses was yet to be determined.
“We cannot quantify the losses at this time, but we are grateful that no lives were lost,” he said.
Kurawa also reaffirmed the university’s policy requiring all electrical appliances to be turned off at the close of each day to enhance safety, minimize energy consumption, and cut costs.
“Routine inspections are conducted to ensure compliance across all departments,” he added.
Authorities are now investigating the cause of the fire while assessing the damage to affected facilities.
