Livestock Ministry Collaborates on Five-Year Peace Strategy
The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development (FMLD) has intensified efforts to address farmer-herder conflicts by hosting a high-level workshop in partnership with the Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRiNG) programme.
Held on Thursday, March 7, 2025, the workshop brought together key stakeholders from government ministries, peace commissions, civil society groups, and international partners to develop an inclusive and conflict-sensitive strategy aimed at stabilizing Nigeria’s livestock sector.
Minister Calls for Structured Conflict Resolution
Declaring the event open, the Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, emphasized the urgent need for structured conflict resolution frameworks to tackle insecurity in the sector.
“Conflicts and insecurity have severely restricted access to land, water, and grazing resources across Nigeria. Our strategic plan prioritizes peace, security, and social cohesion to address these challenges,” he stated.
UK Reaffirms Support for Conflict Resolution
The Head of Governance and Stability at the British High Commission, Magdalene Lagu, reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to Nigeria’s stability, pledging ongoing support through the UK-Nigeria Security and Defence Partnerships.
The workshop specifically focused on refining the Peacebuilding, Security, and Social Cohesion Pillar of the ministry’s strategy, ensuring that all initiatives align with local realities.
Key Outcomes of the Workshop
Participants identified several critical strategies to enhance peacebuilding efforts, including:
- Strengthening dispute resolution mechanisms
- Coordinating livestock migration patterns
- Building trust between farming and pastoralist communities
Dr. Ukoha Ukiwo, Team Leader of SPRiNG, described the workshop as a significant step toward sustainable peace.
“The success of this engagement shows the commitment of all stakeholders to fostering peace and resilience in Nigeria’s livestock sector. We are optimistic that the outcomes will lead to effective conflict-mitigation strategies,” he said.
Nigeria’s Commitment to Livestock Development
Established in 2024 by President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development was created to transform the livestock sector, boost economic growth, and resolve long-standing disputes over land, pasture, and water access.
As part of its five-year strategic plan, the ministry will play a leading role in implementing the 10-National Livestock Development Plan, ensuring long-term stability and prosperity in the sector.
