FCT Security Agencies Join Forces to Combat Cross-Border Crime

In a renewed push for better security in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the FCT Security Committee has announced plans to strengthen collaboration with security agencies in neighboring states.

This move is aimed at preventing criminals from escaping justice by fleeing across state borders.

A United Front Against Crime

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, FCT Police Commissioner CP Olatunji Disu revealed that a joint task force, comprising the military, police, and civil defense, has been actively conducting clearance operations in border communities to deter criminal activities.

“We are intensifying our efforts to ensure criminals cannot simply cross state lines to evade law enforcement,” Disu stated.

The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, who chaired the committee’s first meeting for 2025, expressed full support for these initiatives, emphasizing the need for stronger interstate security cooperation.

Key Security Measures in Place

Joint patrols and intelligence sharing between FCT security agencies and their counterparts in neighboring states.

Crackdown on criminal hideouts in border communities.

Ongoing operations to recover stolen infrastructure, including manhole covers and electrical cables.

Efforts to regulate scavenging activities, locally known as “panteka”, to prevent illegal operations.

Addressing Harassment & Vandalism

Beyond border security, Disu also tackled concerns about harassment by touts linked to the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

He assured residents that operations are being planned to curb these activities and urged the public to report any incidents to the police.

Additionally, he expressed concerns over light sentences for convicted vandals, noting that many return to crime shortly after their release.

He hinted at possible engagements with judicial authorities to push for stricter penalties and better enforcement of existing laws.

Ensuring a Safer FCT

The FCT Security Committee has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents.

Disu assured the public that security agencies will continue to proactively address emerging threats and maintain law and order in the territory.
