A former governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, has dismissed the much-discussed coalition of opposition political parties formed to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
According to Fayose, the coalition is doomed to fail, describing it as a “dead horse” and a complete waste of time.
Fayose made this assertion during an appearance on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, on Friday. He criticized the coalition, stating that no prominent or respected Nigerian has shown support for it. “Tell me one influential Nigerian who has lent their voice to this coalition,” Fayose challenged.
The coalition, reportedly spearheaded by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in 2023, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who recently joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has failed to garner the support of key political figures, according to Fayose.
He explained that the governors of the PDP, focused on their political survival, are not backing Atiku, further undermining the coalition’s chances.
“Most opposition governors prefer Tinubu for their survival over Atiku,” Fayose stated, suggesting that the PDP’s internal issues must first be addressed before any serious challenge can be posed to the ruling party.
In his view, the coalition exists mainly in the imagination of those attempting to create it, labeling it a futile effort. “It’s a waste of time,” Fayose concluded.
