The family of late Monday Joseph is crying out for justice following his alleged death in the custody of the Ondo State Security Network, also known as Amotekun Corps.
Represented by their legal counsel, Mr. Ibukun Fasanmi, the family submitted a formal petition to both Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the Inspector General of Police, calling for an urgent investigation into what they described as a case of torture and extrajudicial killing.
According to the petition, Joseph was detained at the Amotekun facility in Owo, Ondo State, where he was allegedly subjected to inhumane treatment that led to his death. His remains have since been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre morgue in Owo.
The family stressed that Joseph was not only a Nigerian citizen but also the sole breadwinner of his household. “We are urging Your Excellency to ensure a thorough investigation is carried out.
The Amotekun Corps, being a government-backed security outfit, must operate within the confines of the law,” the petition read.
They further warned that the issue, if not addressed, could spiral into unrest, given the level of grief and anger in Joseph’s community.
They demanded an autopsy and immediate prosecution of the officer involved, identified as Officer Lati, alongside his team, to ensure justice is served and to avoid a repeat of such tragedies.
However, in response to the allegations, the Commander of Amotekun in the state, Adetunji Adeleye, denied claims of torture. He stated that Joseph was arrested for a cult-related offense and fell ill during detention.
“We rushed him to the hospital when he became sick, but unfortunately, he died,” Adeleye explained.
The matter has stirred mixed reactions across the state, with many calling for transparency and accountability from the security network.
