The recent appointment of Oba Adesuyi Haastrup as the new Owa-Obokun of Ijesaland has sparked a significant controversy, with the Fajesinmi Royal Family of the Bilaro Olu-Odo Ruling House accusing Governor Ademola Adeleke of violating traditional practices.
The family has raised concerns over the rushed selection and the immediate presentation of the monarch’s Staff of Office, which they believe undermines centuries-old customs and sacred rituals that govern the ascension of a Yoruba king.
Last Friday, kingmakers selected Oba Haastrup as the new Owa-Obokun. Less than 72 hours later, Governor Adeleke confirmed the appointment and presented him with the Staff of Office.
This swift process has caused unrest within the Ijesa community, especially within the Fajesinmi Royal Family, who argue that the appointment process was too hasty and disregarded important cultural rites.
In a statement issued by Prince Olufemi Fajemisin on behalf of the royal family, it was emphasized that the installation of a monarch in Yoruba culture is a deeply spiritual and sacred process.
The family reminded the public that the ascension of a king is not merely a political process but one that involves extensive spiritual rites, including consultations with the Ifa oracle and a purification period known as seclusion. The Fajesinmi family’s statement reads: “The rushed selection, approval, and presentation of the Staff of Office raises serious concerns and has sparked widespread disapproval. This process undermines the spiritual foundation that underpins Yoruba kingship and diminishes the sacred nature of the monarch’s role.”
