Tragedy struck in Eruwa, Oyo State, as a yet-to-be-identified electrician lost his life while attempting to fix a power fault without disconnecting the power source.

An electrician met a tragic end on Wednesday in the Odi Babaode area of Eruwa, located in Ibarapa East Local Government Area of Oyo State. According to reports, the victim was electrocuted while trying to fix a fault on the 33KV high-tension cables operated by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

The Oyo State Fire Service confirmed the unfortunate incident in a statement released on Friday. The General Manager of the service, Canon Yemi Akinyinka, said the man was working on active power lines without turning off the feeder—a fatal mistake.

“The incident occurred when the victim (electrician) was trying to rectify an electrical fault on the active power lines without shutting down the feeder,” Akinyinka stated. He added that the agency received a distress call at 3:29 PM on Wednesday from one Adelanre Adeyinka.

Following the call, a rescue team led by Peluola Babatunde was dispatched to the scene. Sadly, by the time they arrived, the electrician had already succumbed to the electric shock.

Akinyinka emphasized the importance of involving only trained professionals in handling live electrical work. “Life has no duplicate. It’s only a trained engineer or technician who should shoulder the responsibility of handling active electrical equipment,” he warned.

The deceased’s body was recovered and handed over to the Eruwa Police Division for further investigation.

This incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers associated with electricity, and the need for caution and proper procedures when dealing with electrical faults.

Stay safe around electricity. Always call licensed professionals for electrical issues and insist on proper safety procedures.
