Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has cleared the air over his recent visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari, saying it was simply a friendly gathering and nothing political.
The meeting, which took place in Kaduna on Friday, featured key political figures like Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President and PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, alongside ex-governors Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Achike Udenwa (Imo), Gabriel Suswam (Benue), Jibrilla Bindow (Adamawa), and former Minister Isa Pantami.
Given the high-profile nature of the attendees and El-Rufai’s recent switch from the APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the visit stirred up public speculations. But El-Rufai was quick to dismiss the political interpretations.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he wrote:
“We joined over faithful for Jumaat prayers at the Yahaya Road Mosque and had a sumptuous lunch at the Buhari Residence. Our adversaries should not lose any sleep. It is not about politics. It is about unity and brotherhood.
And since we are all politically irrelevant, we just prayed and enjoyed lunch with our mentor.”
El-Rufai also mentioned that he had informed Buhari in advance about his decision to leave the APC. According to him, the former president gave his blessings and prayed for him.
Meanwhile, Buhari has reiterated his loyalty to the APC, despite the political movements of some of his long-time allies.
