El-Rufai: I Sought Buhari’s Approval Before Leaving APC
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasiru El-Rufai, has revealed that his decision to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) was not taken lightly.
According to him, he first consulted former President Muhammadu Buhari, who gave him his blessings.
El-Rufai made this known during an interview with BBC Hausa on Wednesday, days after officially announcing his defection on his verified Facebook page.
Why El-Rufai Consulted Buhari
During the interview, El-Rufai emphasized that Buhari has always been someone he seeks guidance from before making important decisions.
“There are certain people I always consult before making any major move. If they tell me not to go ahead, I listen. Former President Muhammadu Buhari is one of them.
“I met with him on a Friday and informed him of my plan to leave APC. I asked for his prayers and blessings, and he gave them to me.”
El-Rufai also recalled how, during his tenure as governor, he would run key appointments by Buhari before finalizing them.
“Even when I was Kaduna governor, before appointing commissioners, I presented the list to Buhari to ensure none had ever spoken against him. He laughed, thanked me, and told me to proceed.”
What Does This Mean for APC?
El-Rufai’s exit from APC is stirring up conversations about the party’s future, especially with the 2027 elections on the horizon.
Many political analysts believe this could be a sign of deeper issues within the ruling party.
