The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), has expressed confidence that Ekiti State is primed to become a global competitor in agro-cargo activities.
During an inspection of the State Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport in Ado Ekiti, the minister lauded the high-quality construction of the airport’s runway, which he described as “world-class.”
Keyamo, who visited the airport for a fact-finding mission, emphasized that the quality of the runway is comparable to any globally recognized facility.
He remarked, “Ekiti should be the commercial hub of Western Nigeria for agro-products. This region is known for its extensive agricultural activities, and with this airport, Ekiti is set to compete internationally in agro-cargo services.”
While commending the near-completion of essential facilities, Keyamo clarified that the commencement of commercial flights will initially involve non-scheduled services.
This phase will allow private jets to test the airport’s capabilities before large-scale commercial operations begin. He explained that this is standard procedure worldwide, designed to ensure smooth operations before welcoming passenger flights.
The minister, optimistic about the airport’s potential, pointed out the significant agribusiness opportunities in Ekiti and its readiness to support global trade in agro-products.
“This airport is long overdue, and it will put Ekiti on the map as a key player in the international agro-cargo sector,” he added.
Keyamo was accompanied by top officials, including the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Oyeniyi Adebayo, and the Commissioners for Transport and Information, among others.
This visit follows the recent calibration of landing equipment by the National Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) at the airport.
