In a heartfelt conversation, Austin Eguavoen, the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has spoken out about the need for urgent action on the Super Eagles coaching decision. Speaking from Belgium during an interview with Mitchel Obi on Kennis FM, Eguavoen, who served as interim coach during the 2025 AFCON Qualifiers, shared his patriotic sentiment and vision for the future of Nigerian football.
“I love my country,” he said with passion, recalling the golden memories of 1994 when Nigeria triumphed at the AFCON in Tunisia. Despite his historic ties with the team, Eguavoen’s focus remains firmly on the future.
Call for Quick Decision
Eguavoen stressed the importance of making a swift and strategic choice regarding the Super Eagles coaching role. “Whoever they want to engage, we have to do that real quick. All hands must be on deck because we need to ensure the Super Eagles qualify for the 2026 World Cup. March is just around the corner,” he explained.

When asked about his preference between hiring a foreign or local coach, Eguavoen firmly advocated for looking inward. “I will advise we stay at home,” he said, suggesting a scenario where a Nigerian head coach leads the team with support from a foreign technical advisor. Open to Returning but Not Desperate
Although Eguavoen clarified that he’s not actively seeking to retain the role, he expressed readiness to step in if needed. “As a Nigerian, nothing is impossible. Nothing surprises anyone anymore. But the quicker the better,” he remarked, underscoring the urgency of preparing for the World Cup qualifiers.
