EFCC to Local Councils: Autonomy Doesn’t Mean Freedom to Misuse Funds
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a strong warning to local government chairmen, emphasizing that financial autonomy should not be an excuse for corruption and fund mismanagement.
EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede delivered this message at a summit in Gombe State on Wednesday, themed “Local Government Autonomy, Fiscal Responsibility, and Sustainable Development.”
“Autonomy does not grant you immunity. Any violation of financial laws will be prosecuted without delay,” Olukoyede cautioned.
He reminded council chairmen that, unlike governors and their deputies, they do not have constitutional immunity from prosecution.
EFCC to Deploy More Agents for Oversight
Following the Supreme Court’s recent decision granting local governments financial autonomy, the EFCC plans to increase its monitoring efforts in Gombe and across Nigeria.
“We will not wait for your tenure to end before ensuring accountability,” Olukoyede warned.
He further noted that the agency is concerned about the historical mismanagement of council funds, often used as “ATMs” for corrupt officials rather than for community development.
No More Excuses for Inefficiency
Local government chairmen have long blamed state governors for hijacking funds, but with full autonomy in place, the EFCC insists that they must take full responsibility for their financial decisions.
“With this new financial freedom, chairmen must deliver results. Excuses will no longer be tolerated,” Olukoyede said.
EFCC Calls for Financial Discipline
The anti-graft boss urged local government leaders to prioritize transparency and accountability, using the new autonomy to implement meaningful projects rather than engage in financial recklessness.
He advised them to enhance their financial management skills, stating:
“Ignorance of the law is not an excuse. Build your capacity, understand financial regulations, and lead with integrity.”
