A Life of Service: Yakasai Remembers Edwin Clark
Abuja, Nigeria – Elder statesman Alhaji Tanko Yakasai has paid a moving tribute to the late Chief Edwin Clark, describing him as a fearless advocate for justice and a pillar of Nigeria’s unity.
During a condolence visit to Clark’s residence in Asokoro, Abuja, Yakasai met with the bereaved family and members of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), where he reflected on their long-standing friendship.
Yakasai, in a statement signed by PANDEF’s National Publicity Secretary, Chief Dr. Obiuwevbi Ominimini, recalled how their bond dated back to the 1960s.
At the time, Yakasai served as Kano State’s Commissioner for Information under Governor Audu Bako, while Clark held the position of Commissioner for Education in the Midwest State under Governor Samuel Ogbemudia.
“Our paths crossed frequently,” Yakasai said. “Clark often accompanied Governor Ogbemudia to Kano, and I was always warmly received in the Midwest.
Later, as key figures in the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), we remained committed to national unity, justice, and Nigeria’s development.”
At 99, Yakasai expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his friend, calling it a personal tragedy and a major blow to the Niger Delta and Nigeria as a whole.
“He was a rare Nigerian,” he said. “Finding someone to fill his shoes will be difficult.”
A Legacy That Lives On
PANDEF’s National Chairman, Ambassador Godknows Igali, also shared memories of Chief Clark’s final moments, revealing his last words:
“I love Nigeria. Nigeria is my country.”
Igali noted that while the pain of his passing is immense, his legacy as a champion of justice, national unity, and the Niger Delta cause will continue to inspire generations.
Yakasai was also informed of the many dignitaries who had visited to pay their respects, including former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon, former President Goodluck Jonathan, and delegations from the Sultan of Sokoto and the Obong of Calabar.
As Nigeria mourns the loss of a statesman, one thing remains clear—Chief Edwin Clark’s influence will never be forgotten.
