Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has taken decisive action following the tragic killing of 16 travelers in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area, on March 27.
The governor has suspended the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin (Rtd), and banned all unregistered vigilante groups operating in the state.
According to a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, the decision came after reviewing a preliminary report on the incident.
“The vigilante group involved in the gruesome killings was operating illegally, as it was never profiled or registered with the Edo State Security Corps,” the statement read.
The government emphasized that the actions of the unauthorized vigilante group were not in line with the security policies of the Okpebholo administration or the state’s security governance law.
Investigation and Justice
The authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident, with 14 suspects already in custody. A special task force, under the directive of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), is actively hunting for other perpetrators.
The Edo State government reaffirmed the constitutional right of all Nigerians to move freely and conduct lawful business anywhere in the country.
It assured the public that justice would be served and that security measures would be reinforced to prevent such occurrences in the future.
Government’s Response and Support
To support those affected, the government has reached out to the families of the victims, community leaders, and the Kano State government, as many of the deceased were reportedly from Kano.
“We urge all affected parties to remain calm as we are fully committed to ensuring justice is served transparently and efficiently,” the statement concluded.
