The upcoming 2025 ECOWAS Abuja International Marathon promises to be more exciting as organizers announce an increase in the prize money for the 5km fun run. The reward, which was previously $750, has been raised to $1,000—approximately ₦1.7 million. This exciting development aims to encourage more participation and celebrate the 50th anniversary of ECOWAS.
A Special Race for Everyone
Speaking on the event, Ambassador Francis Chuks Njoaguani, Chairman of the Main Organizing Committee and Director of the ECOWAS Youth and Sports Development Centre, highlighted the significance of the fun run. “The 5km fun run is special to us because we initiated it to encourage our people to embrace walking, jogging, and running as part of their daily routine,” he said.
The prize increase, according to Ambassador Njoaguani, is a way to promote active lifestyles while marking a historic milestone for ECOWAS.
Event Details
The marathon, slated for March 1, 2025, will feature two categories: a 21km half marathon and the 5km fun run. The fun run will start at Eagle Square and end at the ECOWAS Commission in Asokoro, while the half marathon will begin and finish at the Commission.
Elite runners from across ECOWAS member countries are expected to participate, competing for a total prize purse of over $71,000. Gabriel Okon, the Race Director, noted, “This event is for everyone—elite runners, fitness enthusiasts, and even those looking to have fun while staying active. It’s a celebration of athleticism, unity, and the vibrant spirit of the region.”
