In a medical case that has left experts astounded, a surgeon in Germany inadvertently transferred cancer from a patient to himself during an operation.
This extraordinary event, first reported by the UK’s Daily Mail, has been documented in The New England Journal of Medicine.
The surgeon, a 53-year-old man, was operating on a patient with malignant fibrous histiocytoma, a rare type of cancer that forms in soft tissues.
During the procedure, he accidentally cut his hand while placing a drain. Though the wound was immediately disinfected and bandaged, the incident led to unforeseen consequences.
Five months later, a small lump appeared on the surgeon’s injured hand. Medical tests confirmed that the lump was a malignant tumor, genetically identical to the cancer previously removed from his patient.
Doctors treating the surgeon concluded that cancerous cells from the patient had entered the surgeon’s bloodstream through the cut.
Despite the body’s usual immune response to foreign cells, the surgeon’s immune system failed to recognize and destroy the tumor cells.
According to the case report, this failure could be attributed to the tumor’s ability to escape immune detection. The tumor mass grew despite the inflammatory reaction around the original cut.
This unique case highlights an unusual form of cancer transmission. Typically, the immune system rejects transplanted tissues from another person, which is why organ transplant recipients must take immunosuppressive drugs.
However, in this instance, the cancerous cells adapted and thrived within the surgeon’s body.
Fortunately, after the tumor was surgically removed, there were no signs of the disease spreading or recurring in the surgeon.
While such cases are exceedingly rare, this incident serves as a reminder of the potential risks medical professionals face during surgical procedures. It also underscores the need for enhanced safety protocols to prevent similar occurrences.
This extraordinary event raises questions about how cancerous cells interact with the immune system. While the medical community continues to study this case, it is a testament to the unpredictable nature of diseases like cancer.
