What was supposed to be a joyful Easter celebration turned into a nightmare for residents of Ogwashi Uku, a quiet town in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State. The community has been thrown into grief since Friday following the mysterious abduction of four young girls from Umuokwe quarters.
The missing children include six-year-old Ebube Nwafido and her 3-year-old sister, Miracle—both daughters of Kingsley and Bose Nwafido. Also abducted are 7-year-old Chimanda and 5-year-old Excel, fondly called Tinubu, who belong to another family.
Parents and neighbors are still struggling to come to terms with the shocking disappearance. According to the distraught father of Ebube and Miracle, the children vanished under suspicious circumstances involving three unfamiliar women who had recently moved into the area.
It was gathered that the women had arrived the community earlier in the week, pretending to look for a one-room apartment. One of them reportedly gained access to the Nwafido residence under the pretense of needing to use the toilet due to an upset stomach.
Mrs. Bose Nwafido recounted her encounter with the women: “One of them said she drank Pepsi and Zobo and had a runny stomach. I directed her to the bush behind our house to relieve herself. Later, she claimed she was going to the POS to get money for rent.”
Unknown to residents, this was all part of a sinister plot. By Friday, when the children were lured with biscuits from a nearby supermarket, the women had gained enough trust among the kids.
“I left the house for a program and instructed my children to stay within the compound,” said Mrs. Nwafido. “By noon, some kids returned and said the women wanted to buy them biscuits. That was the last time we saw them.”
Alarm was raised when the children could no longer be found. Neighbours who went to the women’s apartment discovered that both the women and the children had vanished, leaving the room completely empty.
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, has confirmed the incident and assured the public that a full investigation is underway to locate and rescue the abducted children.
This heartbreaking incident has left the Ogwashi Uku community in fear and mourning, hoping and praying for the safe return of their children.
