Tragedy struck in Kebbi State as the Lakurawa terrorist group launched a violent attack on Birnin Dede village in Arewa Local Government Area (LGA), killing at least 13 people and setting eight villages ablaze.
According to reports, the attack was a reprisal for the killing of one of their leaders, Maigemu, by a combined military force in the state.
Villagers Left in Fear
One of the residents, Malam Umar, described the horror of the attack, revealing that only one village was spared—possibly because it was guarded by the military.
“The attackers came in large numbers and burned down almost every village around Birnin Dede. They spared only one, which had soldiers stationed there. We seek protection from Allah against this dreaded group,” he said.
Military Crackdown on Terrorists in Kebbi
The escalation of violence follows a recent operation by security forces in Kebbi, backed by Governor Nasir Idris, that led to the killing of Maigemu, a key leader of the Lakurawa group.
Security agencies are yet to issue an official statement on the latest attack, and attempts to reach the Kebbi Police Command spokesman, Nafiu Abubakar, were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
The situation in Kebbi remains tense as residents call for urgent government intervention to prevent further loss of lives and property.
