Nigerian music sensation Davido has opened up about his relationship with convicted fraudster and Instagram celebrity Ramon Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi.
Speaking during a recent podcast interview, the Afrobeats superstar admitted they were friends but claimed he had no knowledge of Hushpuppi’s involvement in fraud-related activities.
“Hushpuppi is coming out soon. He lived life. But to me, it’s not worth it to end up behind bars. I won’t make excuses for them, but some people just want to enjoy life for five years, no matter the consequences,” Davido said.
He added that Nigeria’s difficult economic climate often pushes many into desperate choices.
“There’s a kind of hardship in Nigeria that can make someone say, ‘let me enjoy for two years and I’m fine.’ People really think like that,” the ‘Awuke’ crooner explained.
Davido expressed sympathy for Hushpuppi and said he hoped his former friend would eventually regain his freedom.
“My prayers go out to him. He was my friend. I used to see him around, but I didn’t really know what he was doing. He did live a good life,” he added.
Hushpuppi, who became known for flaunting his luxurious lifestyle on social media, was arrested in Dubai in June 2020. He later pleaded guilty to conspiracy to launder money in April 2021.
In 2022, he was sentenced by a U.S. court to over 11 years in prison and ordered to repay $1.7 million to two victims.
According to U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada, Hushpuppi’s lavish lifestyle was funded through global fraud and money laundering schemes.
