In a significant crackdown on drug smuggling, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted a large consignment of illicit drugs worth over ₦18 million at the Mfum Border in Cross River State.
The seizure was conducted by officers of the Cross River-Calabar Free Trade Zone and Akwa Ibom Area Command of the NCS. A total of 659 units of controlled narcotics were recovered and handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further action.
What Was Seized?
Among the intercepted drugs were:
216 units of Pethidine 100mg
216 units of Morphine Sulphate
108 units of Fentanyl 50mm
37 packets of Phenobarbital
37 units of Sodium Sterop
33 units of Midazolam Mylan
26 units of Sodium Injectables
Collaboration at Work
At the official handover held at the NCS Command Headquarters in Calabar, Area Comptroller Gabriel Ogbonna praised his officers’ dedication. He highlighted that the successful operation reflects the growing synergy between Customs and the NDLEA.
“Today is not just about the seizure, but a lesson in cooperation,” he said. “It’s a chance for younger officers in both agencies to learn the value of teamwork in promoting national security.”
NDLEA Responds
Receiving the consignment, NDLEA Commander in Cross River, Rachael Umebuali, expressed appreciation for the Customs’ continued support. She emphasized that the partnership strengthens both agencies’ operational capabilities.
“This collaboration helps us serve Nigerians better,” she added. “We look forward to more coordinated efforts.
