The Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of the former Managing Director of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), Ahmed Kuru, over allegations of fraud amounting to N76 billion and $31.5 million.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had scheduled Kuru’s arraignment along with several other defendants, including Captain Roy Ilegbodu, Managing Director of Arik Air, Kamilu Omokide, receiver manager of Arik, Union Bank Plc, and Super Bravo Limited, on charges of fraudulent conversion, abuse of office, and making false statements.
Despite being called to court, Kuru failed to appear, prompting the judge, Justice Mojisola Dada, to issue a bench warrant for his arrest. EFCC’s prosecuting counsel, Dr. Wahab Shittu, expressed frustration over Kuru’s behavior, including jumping bail on multiple occasions. Shittu revealed that Kuru had been unreachable after the EFCC attempted to serve him, with Kuru even blocking his contact.
Though a lawyer appeared in court claiming to represent Kuru, the court proceeded with issuing the warrant. The judge dismissed the plea to lift the warrant and scheduled the next hearing for January 20, 2025.
The charges against the defendants are serious, involving allegations of fraudulent conversion, stealing, and dishonest handling of property, in violation of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
