China Supports Nigeria’s Bid to Expand Currency Swap and Issue Panda Bonds

Thursday, January 9, 2025

China has thrown its weight behind Nigeria’s request to expand the currency swap agreement and launch Panda bonds, marking a significant step in strengthening financial collaboration between the two nations.

The announcement was made by Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Wang Yi emphasized that these initiatives would boost Nigeria’s economy, enhance financial security, and deepen bilateral relations.

“The currency swap arrangement reflects the strong momentum of our financial cooperation.

Regarding Nigeria’s request for an expansion, we will positively consider the matter. Our financial partnership continues to thrive,” Wang Yi noted.

What This Means for Nigeria
The currency swap agreement, first signed in 2018, allows direct trade between the two countries using the Chinese yuan and Nigerian naira, eliminating reliance on third-party currencies.

Expanding this agreement could ease liquidity challenges and enhance trade.

Additionally, China welcomed Nigeria’s intention to issue Panda bonds—renminbi-denominated bonds issued in China’s domestic market by foreign entities.

Wang Yi expressed confidence in Nigeria’s credibility, stating, “Issuing Panda bonds will provide Nigeria with stable revenue and financial security.”

Infrastructure Development in Focus
China reaffirmed its commitment to Nigeria’s infrastructure projects, particularly in the railway sector.

Wang Yi highlighted that Chinese banks recently funded phase three of Nigeria’s railway modernization project, including the Kano-Kaduna railway, which aligns with Nigeria’s broader economic goals.

Panda bonds offer Nigeria access to China’s vast investor base, providing a vital avenue to bridge budget deficits and finance critical infrastructure. With China’s backing, Nigeria stands to benefit from this strategic financial tool.
