Canada-based Adebehinje Shares His $28,000 Japa Journey
November 23, 2024
Sunday Samuel Adebehinje, now based in Canada, has disclosed the significant cost of his relocation journey.
Adebehinje spent $28,000 (about N50 million) to move abroad, but he believes it was well worth the investment.
His experience reflects the growing optimism among Nigerians of all ages and professions who are leaving the country due to the ongoing “japa syndrome”—the migration trend that has intensified in recent years.
The increasing wave of emigration has raised concerns about Nigeria’s socio-economic future.
Recently, Professor Ayodeji Agboola, Vice-Chancellor of Olabisi Onabanjo University, warned that this exodus threatens the nation’s development, urging academics to focus on reversing the trend.
Adebehinje moved to Canada in 2023, initially without his family, to pursue education.
Though the relocation cost was steep, he finds it rewarding.
Now working as a machine operator while continuing his studies, he cites boredom and harsh weather as his main challenges but remains grateful for the opportunities, including networking and exposure.
He is eager to visit his family in Nigeria and expressed willingness to help others move to Canada, if possible.
