Bishop Kukah to Tinubu: Save Nigerians from Hunger and Insecurity

Archbishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto has made a passionate plea to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to rescue Nigerians from the worsening hardship marked by hunger, insecurity, and poverty.

Delivering his Easter message, Bishop Kukah expressed deep concern over the growing despair in the country, stating that Nigerians are “bleeding” and desperately need relief from the “cross” of suffering.

He called on the government to act swiftly and decisively to protect citizens from bandits, terrorists, and other violent groups threatening national peace.

“Mr. President, hunger, sickness, and desolation stalk the land,” Kukah said, acknowledging that while the removal of fuel subsidies may have been necessary, the fallout has intensified hardship for many.

He pointed out that despite increased domestic revenue, basic needs like food and safety remain unattainable for millions.

The cleric also criticized the government’s reliance on palliative distributions as a solution, arguing that such measures reduce the dignity of citizens. Instead, he urged the administration to elevate food security as a fundamental human right.

Kukah condemned the persistence of insecurity, which he said has become a “cancer” consuming communities across Nigeria.

“Bandits, who were once used as tools for political power play, have now entrenched themselves deeply in our society,” he stated, adding that nowhere in Nigeria feels safe anymore.

According to him, the situation has pushed the country to the brink. “Our nation is turning into a massive morgue. Every family knows someone who has been kidnapped, killed, or displaced. This is a national emergency,” he declared.

While Kukah acknowledged that President Tinubu did not create Nigeria’s current crisis, he emphasized that it is now his responsibility to lead the nation out of it. “Mr. President, please bring us down from this cross of evil. Nigerians have suffered enough,” he concluded.
