Rising Tensions as Violence from Neighboring Countries Spills Into Benin
A deadly attack in Benin’s Karimama town has left six soldiers dead, with the Beninese army neutralizing 17 assailants in response, according to military sources.
The Saturday afternoon assault occurred in the W National Park, a nature reserve along the borders of Niger and Burkina Faso, two countries struggling with long-running insurgencies linked to Islamic State and Al-Qaeda-affiliated jihadist groups.
Rising Threats in Northern Benin
Over the past few years, northern Benin has seen a sharp increase in violent attacks, with security forces facing growing threats from militant groups crossing the porous borders.
According to a diplomatic source, more than 121 Beninese soldiers have been killed between 2021 and December 2024, with the situation deteriorating as conflict in Niger and Burkina Faso intensifies.
In January, an attack in the Pendjari National Park resulted in the deaths of 28 Beninese soldiers, later claimed by Al-Qaeda-linked Group to Support Islam and Muslims (JNIM).
Similarly, in December 2024, gunmen killed three soldiers and wounded four others while they were guarding an oil pipeline in northeast Benin.
Government’s Response: Strengthening Border Security
To curb the growing violence, the Beninese government launched Operation Mirador in 2022, deploying nearly 3,000 troops to secure the country’s borders.
Additionally, 5,000 new personnel were recruited to reinforce security operations in the north.
Despite these efforts, the recent attacks highlight the persistent security challenges facing the country.
Last week, Benin’s Ministry of Defense introduced psychological support programs for its troops.
“It’s our collective responsibility to provide them with the resources to carry out their mission in the best conditions possible, ensuring their safety both physically and mentally,” said Colonel-Major Mathias Alizannon.
The Bigger Picture
As violence escalates in West Africa, concerns grow over the potential spread of extremist activities into coastal nations like Benin, Togo, and Ghana.
With insurgencies already deeply rooted in Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali, regional security forces are under immense pressure to prevent further spillover.
Benin’s ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and strengthen national security will be crucial in maintaining stability within the region.
