Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has openly expressed his willingness to work alongside Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, to strengthen Nigeria’s opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking after a private meeting with Obi at the Government House in Bauchi, Mohammed praised the former Anambra State governor’s leadership style, vision, and deep understanding of governance and the economy.
“We have a lot of respect and admiration for him because of his style of politics, his statesmanship, and his deep knowledge of governance and economic matters.
Peter Obi has a clear vision of where politics and politicians should be in terms of delivering good governance, impacting lives, and uniting the country,” Mohammed stated.
The Bauchi governor emphasized that Obi has become a strong figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics and that their discussions covered critical national issues, including the crisis in Rivers State.
“Whether we like it or not, he is now the face of opposition politics in Nigeria. I appreciate his leadership and what he is doing to strengthen the opposition,” he added.
A Call for Unity in Opposition Politics
Mohammed made it clear that he is ready to collaborate with Obi to unite the opposition, strategize, and push for better governance in Nigeria.
“I want to say clearly that I am ready to work with Peter Obi. We must come together to provide a formidable opposition, offer a vision-driven leadership alternative, and rescue Nigeria from mediocrity. The time has come for us to act with sincerity and focus.
Our alliance will send a strong message, and many of my fellow governors support this movement,” he declared.
Peter Obi’s Vision for Nigeria
In response, Peter Obi explained that his visit to Bauchi was part of his consultations with key political stakeholders to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges.
“Some Nigerians may wonder why I am here, but I have come to consult with him because he is a critical stakeholder in Nigerian politics,” Obi said.
He reiterated that tackling poverty is key to addressing criminality, particularly in northern Nigeria.
“When people talk about crime in Nigeria, especially in the North, I tell them that the real issue is poverty. Until we address poverty, we cannot solve criminality,” Obi noted.
He emphasized the need for increased investment in education and agriculture to lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty and reduce crime rates.
As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 elections, the growing collaboration between opposition figures like Bala Mohammed and Peter Obi signals a possible realignment of political forces aimed at reshaping the country’s governance.
