In a notable gathering on Friday, several prominent political figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Governor of Kaduna State Nasiru El-Rufai, former Governor of Sokoto State Aminu Tambuwal, and ex-Benue Governor Gabriel Suswam paid a closed-door visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari at his residence in Kaduna.
Also present were other political heavyweights such as former Adamawa Governor Jibrilla Bindow and former Imo Governor Achike Udenwa. Though details of their private meeting remain undisclosed, Atiku described it as a courtesy and post-Sallah visit.
In an interview after the meeting, Atiku addressed speculations about the unusual mix of politicians across party lines. “I have the right to be friends with anyone, politically affiliated or not. They are all my friends,” he said.
On the possibility of a new political alliance, Atiku hinted that while plans are underway to build a strong opposition coalition, that was not the purpose of the visit.
Earlier on social media, Atiku shared his excitement about the meeting. “I had the opportunity to pay a post-Sallah visit to former President Buhari. As usual, he had me in stitches with his unique sense of humor,” he wrote.
El-Rufai also spoke briefly, noting that he missed the Sallah period and came to pay his respects in person. “We’re here for a Sallah visit to President Buhari,” he affirmed.
The high-profile gathering has sparked conversations among political observers about potential alignments ahead of future elections.
