A violent clash erupted in the Ette community of Ikot-Abasi Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, on Tuesday, leaving an army officer and a villager hospitalized.
Several vehicles were also set ablaze as tensions flared in the area.
How the Clash Started
According to sources, the confrontation began when an army officer attempted to arrest diesel thieves operating in the community.
However, things quickly escalated when residents allegedly turned against him. In an attempt to escape the mob attack, the soldier fired his weapon, injuring a villager.
The enraged community members reacted by blocking a section of the East-West Road, a major highway connecting travelers to Port Harcourt. This forced motorists to take alternative routes for safety.
Police React to the Incident
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed the violent clash. Speaking on the situation, the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, stated that both the army officer and the injured villager have been taken to the hospital for treatment.
“The command is aware of the incident. The army officer was pursuing suspected diesel thieves when he was attacked by the community.
In an attempt to escape, he fired a shot, injuring a villager. However, the situation has been brought under control, and investigations are ongoing.”
Current Situation
Authorities have reassured the public that calm has been restored in the area.
Security personnel are keeping a close watch to prevent further escalation, while investigations continue to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the clash.
