The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed confidence in its political standing following a recent meeting between former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, and ex-Governor Donald Duke. The trio convened in Abeokuta, Ogun State, to deliberate on Nigeria’s political future, sparking speculation about potential strategies for the 2027 general elections.
Despite the high-profile nature of the meeting, APC’s National Publicity Director, Bala Ibrahim, dismissed any notion of a threat to President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Ibrahim emphasized Tinubu’s prominent role in contemporary Nigerian politics, suggesting that the combined influence of Obasanjo, Kwankwaso, and Duke does not pose a significant challenge.
“With due respect, I hold Obasanjo in high esteem. As a former President, ex-Head of State, and an elder statesman, I don’t want to take issues with him. But when it comes to the politics of Nigeria, particularly contemporary politics, Tinubu is not their mate,” Ibrahim stated. “Tinubu is head and shoulders above them in modern politics in Nigeria. So the combination of Obasanjo, Kwankwaso, Peter Obi, and Donald Duke, who was my schoolmate, does not present a threat to Tinubu. These are people who were trashed in the last election.”
The meeting has garnered attention amid ongoing discussions about the 2027 elections, especially after Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, advocated for President Tinubu’s re-election, asserting that there would be no vacancy in Aso Rock until 2031.
While the specifics of the Abeokuta meeting remain undisclosed, sources suggest it was part of broader efforts to strategize for the upcoming elections. Kwankwaso, sharing insights on social media, mentioned that discussions centered on significant national issues, including the future of politics and governance in Nigeria.
As political alignments continue to evolve, the APC maintains that its position remains robust, viewing the recent meeting as a routine political engagement rather than a formidable challenge to its dominance.
