Hon. Ibraheem Bolarinwa Oyekunle, a former House of Representatives aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Irewole/Isokan/Ayedaade Federal Constituency in Osun State, has survived what appears to be a targeted assassination attempt in Abuja.
The incident occurred on the evening of Friday, April 4, 2025, at Gwosa Market along the Airport Road. According to Oyekunle, a suspicious ash-coloured Toyota Corolla with hidden number plates was parked nearby.
Shortly after he stopped to buy fruits and produce from local traders, gunmen attacked him and shot directly at his head, demanding he “surrender himself.”
Oyekunle, who sustained injuries to his head and leg, recounted his terrifying experience in a statement issued on Wednesday. He explained that the attackers didn’t ask for money or belongings, further indicating that the motive was not robbery but something more sinister.
“In that moment, I knew my life was at risk,” he said. “I charged at one of the attackers and managed to escape amid gunfire. I thank God for sparing my life.”
The politician was initially treated at Sauka Divine Hospital and later transferred to the Nigerian Air Force Hospital in Abuja, where he received further medical care. He has since been discharged and is recovering.
Oyekunle called on the Inspector-General of Police and other relevant security agencies to launch a full-scale investigation into the attack. “This was a coordinated attempt on my life, and it should not be taken lightly. Justice must be served,” he urged.
He also expressed gratitude to the medical teams who cared for him and to bystanders who tried to help. Reaffirming his dedication to public service, he said, “I remain committed to the people of Irewole/Isokan/Ayedaade. This experience only highlights the urgent need for better security in our country.”
