Anambra Police Commissioner Promises to Re-Arrest Escaped Suspects in Lawmaker’s Murder
The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has vowed to re-arrest the two suspects who escaped after being initially detained for their alleged involvement in the murder of Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly representing Onitsha 1 Constituency.
CP Orutugu made this commitment on Wednesday when he hosted a delegation led by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Somtochukwu Udeze, at the Police Headquarters in Awka.
Tragic Death of Justice Azuka
Justice Azuka was kidnapped on December 24, 2024, while returning home for Christmas. After weeks of uncertainty, his lifeless body was discovered on the Second Niger Bridge on February 6, 2025. He was later laid to rest on Saturday.
Suspects Escape Police Custody
In a shocking twist, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed in a press statement that the two suspects previously arrested in connection with the case had escaped while leading police officers to another suspect’s location.
The escape sparked outrage among lawmakers and the public, raising concerns about security lapses in the state.
Police Assure Justice Will Be Served
During the high-profile meeting with state lawmakers, CP Orutugu assured the public that the police were taking every necessary step to recapture the fleeing suspects and hold those responsible accountable.
“We are committed to upholding the rule of law and maintaining public trust in our security system. The re-arrest of the suspects is a top priority, and justice will be served,” Orutugu stated.
He further revealed that disciplinary measures had already been initiated against the officers involved in the incident.

Among those present at the meeting were:
- Somtochukwu Udeze (Speaker of the Anambra House of Assembly)
- Sir Ikenna Ofodeme (Majority Leader)
- Jude Ifenanyi Umennajiego
- The State Chairman of the Labour Party
- Other senior political delegates
The meeting concluded with a solemn one-minute silence in honor of the late Justice Azuka, as lawmakers called for a thorough investigation into his death and the escape of the suspects.
