Joint Security Forces Mobilize in Nnewi and Ihiala to Restore Public Confidence
Anambra State witnessed heightened security presence on Monday, as police and other law enforcement agencies ramped up efforts to dismantle the long-running Monday sit-at-home directive that has crippled businesses and disrupted life across the southeast.
Residents in Nnewi and Ihiala, areas frequently hit by the non-state-imposed lockdown, saw an influx of joint security patrols aimed at encouraging people to return to their daily routines without fear.
According to the Anambra State Police Command, the operation involved a robust coalition of agencies including the Nigerian Army’s 302 Artillery Regiment, the Navy, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Immigration Service, and the Anambra Vigilante Group.
Strong Show of Force
DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the state command, said the patrols—conducted on April 7—are part of a broader initiative to restore public confidence, secure lives and property, and deter any threats.
“The combined team moved through Nnewi and Ihiala with fully equipped operational vehicles and armored support to assure residents of their safety,” Ikenga noted.
Residents Defying Fear
Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, applauded the bravery of residents in Awka, Onitsha, and other parts of the state who have continued to engage in their daily activities despite ongoing threats.
“We thank the transport unions, market leaders, and every stakeholder who has stood up against actions that seek to divide and destabilize us,” CP Orutugu said.
The Commissioner emphasized that the goal is not just about restoring order but also rejuvenating the state’s economy, which has suffered due to recurring Monday shutdowns.
Towards Lasting Normalcy
The renewed security operations aim to permanently end the fear and economic stagnation associated with the sit-at-home order. Authorities urged residents to stay vigilant, cooperate with security agents, and report suspicious activities as part of collective efforts to reclaim public peace.
“We are committed to building a safer, united, and economically vibrant Anambra,” the police reaffrmed.
