The Anambra State Police Command has taken full responsibility for the escape of two prime suspects linked to the gruesome killing of Justice Azuka, a lawmaker representing Onitsha North 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly.
A Tragic Murder and a Shocking Escape
Justice Azuka was kidnapped on December 24, 2024, and weeks later, on February 6, 2025, his body was found lifeless on the Second Niger Bridge.
Following his murder, security forces launched an investigation and arrested 11 suspects believed to be involved in the crime.
However, in a dramatic twist, two of these suspects managed to escape while leading police officers to apprehend another prime suspect in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area.
The shocking escape, which happened on February 8, has sparked outrage among government officials, lawmakers, and concerned citizens, with many questioning the efficiency of the security agencies.
Police Accept Responsibility, Vow to Recapture Fugitives
Reacting to the public outcry, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, released a statement on Thursday acknowledging the failure of the police operation and assuring that every effort is being made to track down and rearrest the fugitives.
“The Anambra State Police Command takes full responsibility for the operational lapses that led to the escape of the two suspects involved in the gruesome murder of Honourable Justice Azuka.
We remain resolute and will not rest until they are re-arrested, and every individual linked to this crime faces the full wrath of the law,” Ikenga stated.
Strengthening Security Measures
In light of this incident, the Anambra Police Command has reportedly strengthened its security protocols to prevent a similar occurrence.
Ikenga emphasized the importance of transparency, stating that the public would be continuously updated on the progress of the case.
“In line with our commitment to transparency, we have briefed Ndi Anambra and the general public, reaffirming our dedication to ensuring public safety and keeping everyone informed about developments,” he added.
Caution Against Incitement
Ikenga also urged the public to exercise caution in their reactions, warning against inflammatory remarks that could escalate tensions.
He acknowledged the right to free speech but emphasized the importance of maintaining peace while investigations continue.
“While acknowledging the public’s right to express their concerns, we appeal to stakeholders to exercise restraint and avoid comments that could incite violence.
Our focus remains on conducting a thorough and impartial investigation that upholds the principles of justice,” he concluded.
This case has once again put the spotlight on security lapses in Nigeria, raising concerns about law enforcement’s ability to handle high-profile criminal cases effectively.
As efforts to recapture the escaped suspects continue, the public remains watchful, hoping for justice to be served.
