In light of escalating insecurity in the Nimo community, Njikoka Local Government Area, Anambra State, the Igwe-in-Council has endorsed the deployment of military personnel to ensure the safety of residents and visitors during the festive season. This decision comes after repeated cases of kidnappings and killings by unknown gunmen who have set up camps in the area’s forests.
The Nimo-Neni road, a key route in the community, has become a danger zone due to the criminal activities, forcing many residents to abandon their homes. With Christmas around the corner and many indigenes returning from various parts of the world to celebrate with their families, the Igwe-in-Council, under the leadership of Igwe Maxi Ike Oliobi, has taken proactive measures to restore peace.
Military Presence for Safety, Not Intimidation
Reacting to concerns raised by some youth leaders who claimed the deployment targets them, the palace security coordinator, Mr. Stephen Gbulie, clarified that the soldiers are in Nimo solely to protect lives and property. He emphasized that the troops do not mount checkpoints or harass civilians, instead focusing on patrolling the community to deter criminal elements.
“The military presence is a collective decision by the elders and not a unilateral move by our traditional ruler. Their sole aim is to curb the rising wave of violence, including kidnappings and attacks carried out by unknown gunmen,” Gbulie explained.
Alarming Incidents Prompt Action
Recent incidents underscore the urgency of the situation. One Sunday Olisa was shot while fleeing gunmen, while another resident was kidnapped at Egbengwu Nimo and released only after a hefty ₦7 million ransom was paid. The criminals have also issued written threats, including one to a South Africa-based indigene, demanding he purchase weapons for them or risk having his family home destroyed.
Gbulie added, “As Christmas approaches, many of our sons and daughters in the diaspora had begun returning. Sadly, some have fled again due to the insecurity. We hope the military presence will create an atmosphere of peace and security, allowing everyone to enjoy the festive season without fear.”
Calls for Cooperation and Government Support
The Igwe-in-Council has reported the dire situation to the Anambra State government and other security agencies, acknowledging the community’s limited resources to confront heavily armed criminals. Residents have been urged to cooperate with security personnel, report suspicious activities, and remain vigilant as efforts to restore peace continue.
This strategic move by the Nimo community demonstrates the commitment of its leaders to ensuring that Christmas celebrations are marked with joy and tranquility, free from the shadow of violence and fear.
