A massive protest broke out at the National Assembly on Wednesday as supporters of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, alongside civil society groups, demanded the resignation of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The demonstrators called for him to step down pending an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him.
Protesters Demand Accountability
Arriving at the National Assembly gates as early as 8:00 AM—just hours before plenary resumed—the protesters carried banners with inscriptions such as ‘Akpabio Must Go’ and ‘Protect Women’s Rights’.
Their primary demand was a transparent and fair probe into the allegations against the Senate President.
The protest follows Akpoti-Uduaghan’s explosive claims that Akpabio allegedly harassed her and retaliated against her after she refused his advances.
The senator made these accusations during a live television interview, further escalating tensions within the Senate.
The Controversy Behind the Protest
The feud between the two lawmakers reportedly intensified after a controversial seating arrangement change on February 20, 2025, which Akpoti-Uduaghan interpreted as a form of retaliation by Akpabio.
A spokesperson for the protesting groups emphasized their commitment to ensuring justice and accountability.
“We are here to demand justice for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and to hold those in power accountable. No one is above the law,” the spokesperson stated.
Senate Yet to Respond as Protest Remains Peaceful
As of press time, neither Akpabio nor the Senate leadership has issued an official response to the protesters’ demands.
Meanwhile, security operatives closely monitored the demonstration, which remained peaceful.
